One definitely doesn't have to be a villain or scoundrel to be "dark".

Great post! Colonel Brandon's static character is that of a man with a passionate heart restrained by the deep pain of the past. Yet even that does not stop him from loving again, even without hope. That's why I go back and forth. Fortunately my fictional fantasies don't require fidelity.Veronica Moniquehttp://www.darkjaneaustenbookclub.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4078409689570875027.post-53155745785213405732012-05-02T21:53:16.012-04:002012-05-02T21:53:16.012-04:00She may not have given her monsters fangs or claws...She may not have given her monsters fangs or claws, but the prejudices some of Jane Austen's characters exhibit shows a callousness that is more monster at heart.Veronica Moniquehttp://www.darkjaneaustenbookclub.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4078409689570875027.post-56448243067762085952012-05-02T21:49:44.130-04:002012-05-02T21:49:44.130-04:00I'm glad to share. He seemed presented as a man of steadfast honor, but not one of a truly steadfast heart. True he was young when he made his promise to Lucy, and I have no doubt that his feelings for Elinor are sincere; however, with the presence of Colonel Brandon and even Willoughby if it weren't for Elinor's thinking of him he would quite fade into the background completely.Veronica Moniquehttp://www.darkjaneaustenbookclub.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4078409689570875027.post-54122644752101733822012-05-02T21:36:58.053-04:002012-05-02T21:36:58.053-04:00So glad to have the opportunity, Barbara, and look...So glad to have the opportunity, Barbara, and looking forward to delving into your book come December with my fellow Dark Jane Austen Book Club members.Veronica Moniquehttp://www.darkjaneaustenbookclub.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4078409689570875027.post-65623386909251082142012-05-02T08:03:14.873-04:002012-05-02T08:03:14.873-04:00I agree that Darcy changing is about the damn sexi...I agree that Darcy changing is about the damn sexiest thing ever. He's supposed to be admirable due to his steadfastness in keeping his promise to Lucy Steele, yet most S&S fanfic is about Brandon, or the occasional "reformed Willoughby" fic.

~ Junewilliamsjunewilliams7https://www.blogger.com/profile/01695395707349685051noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4078409689570875027.post-23404132979908294512012-05-01T19:09:45.483-04:002012-05-01T19:09:45.483-04:00Veronica:
Thank you so much for your very thought...Veronica:

Thank you so much for your very thought-filled post. I DO see the brightness and the loyalty of Colonel Brandon, and Mr. Knightley for that matter. I do think that one of the things I like about Mr. Darcy WAS his willingness to look at his character and be willing to change. For me, part of it is creates a 'dream' of sorts that there might be some of the 'characters' in my current life that might actually look at them selves and change.

I also, liked your thoughts about the symbolic nature of the dark characters in some of the sequels/mashups that you and your blog follow. And I am grateful that you have been interested in my P&P/Christmas Carol mashup! Thanks again for your willingness to post here!

Barbara Tiller ColeBarbara Allen Andersonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01858911831302526813noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4078409689570875027.post-54159459413649680772012-05-01T17:25:19.807-04:002012-05-01T17:25:19.807-04:00I really enjoyed reading your comments on Jane....I really enjoyed reading your comments on Jane.'s darkness in her writing.joyehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07972508806527606747noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4078409689570875027.post-27521898022677186902012-05-01T16:23:18.947-04:002012-05-01T16:23:18.947-04:00That is very fascinating insight about how Col.
