You Might be a
Darcyholic…if…
(Post and Contest)
Today was a rainy day,
and I spent some time reflecting some of the ways in which you might be able to
determine whether you are a Darcyholic or not. Spending as much time as I do with people as obsessed with
Mr. Darcy as I, I have learned various things members of this rather unique
society have done due to their obsession.
I can say that I know at least one person that has done all of the
following. Yes, I find myself on
this list as well, and may tell you some of the specifics. I do know that many of these things are
quite common amongst our community.
Please read the list
and comment. Share with me the most significant thing you have done. Prove to me that you are a
Darcyholic. The BEST answer will
win a guest post on this blog!
If you constantly refresh your computer, checking for
updates of your latest favorite stories—You might be a Darcyholic!
If you have calendar alarms set on your phone to remind you
of the release dates of upcoming Pride and Prejudice variations—You
might be a Darcyholic!
If you have commissioned your state for special license
plates for your vehicle—whether it is Mr. Darcy, Mrs. Darcy, Firth Fan, MM
Maniac, Darcy-4-Ever, etc.—You might be a Darcyholic!
If you have ever read Jane Austen fan fiction during an in-service
or staff meeting at work—You might be a Darcyholic!
If you have ever read your favorite story update on your
phone, while you were at a stoplight, on your phone—You might be a Darcyholic!
If the screensaver on your computer is full of pictures of
your favorite Darcy—You might be a Darcyholic!
If the ring tone on your cell phone is either Colin Firth or
Matthew MacFayden’s voice saying, ‘You must allow me to tell you have ardently
I admire and love you’—You might be a Darcyholic!
If your obsession with determining how a slight variation in
Pride and Prejudice might have completely changed the story, and
determine that you need to write said variation—You might be a Darcyholic!
If you family has ever attempted to do an intervention due
to your obsession with all things Darcy—You might be a Darcyholic!
If you have you ever had a sleepless night because you were
trying to figure out what might happen next in one of your favorite stories, or
because you HAD to finish the book before sleeping—You might be a Darcyholic!
If you have a ‘muse’ named Darcy, and hear his voice in your
head while you are writing—You might be a Darcyholic!
If you have you ever been written up at work because you
missed deadlines due to your JAFF reading—You might be a Darcyholic!
If you have ever had a higher Amex, Mastercard or Visa bill
at the end of the month due to the number of Austen variations you have
purchased on line, than your ability to pay said bill—You might be a
Darcyholic!
If you have developed a blog to celebrate your Darcyholism—YOU
(well, in this case—I —Barbara) might be a Darcyholic!
Well...since I'm one of those who commissioned the state of WV for a vanity license plate that says MS DARCY on the back of my car...and a front plate that says FIRTH LADY...I'd say that qualifies!! LOL!
ReplyDeleteLove your blog! Lots of Hugs!
Sandy! Yes, I did think about you when I wrote that particular one. But I did NOT give away all of your secrets as you know I am already hoping for a guest post from you! :D
DeleteSo glad you like my blog! Hugs back. I am trying to get back to real writing now! :D
Barbara
If you have made yourself a spreadsheet to keep ur 100s of Austen lit straight so u never accidently buy the same book twice (or three times) off amazon again, then you are a Darcyholic. :)
ReplyDeleteErlynn:
DeleteI LOVE that! A Spreadsheet huh? Do you have a library cataloguing system yet? I know a couple people that do, complete with an index file!
Barbara
I just made up a spreadsheet last week!
DeleteIf you quit your other addictions (Farmville and Farmtown) because they don't leave enough time for your main addiction (reading JAFF), you might be a Darcyholic. My name is Robin, and I am a Darcyholic.
ReplyDeleteHey Robin! Now I resemble that one as well! But I was really broken of the habit when I had to have a NON-secure server in order to play those games and it was NOT worth that! :D
DeleteI certainly hope that never happens to my JAFF life...LOL.
Barbara, Darcyholic!
My name is Annette, and I am a Darcyholic. I once drove to the farm with my laptop open to see how far I could go before I lose the wireless connection from the house. The main farm is not close enough.
ReplyDeleteSecond best - I go home for lunch and bathroom breaks.
I am saving my best symptom for later though.
Annette:
DeleteMy question is that do you NOW have a wireless connection AT the arm so you can read there. OR, I can highly recommend a smart phone with a My Wifi connection so you can connect to the internet on your laptop with your cell phone. Not that I now can do that so I can read in the car or anything like that! LOL. But I am often reading and catching up on things IN THE CAR when my husband is driving! I want to be sure and say..when my HUSBAND is driving..LOL. however he will not allow me to do that at night as the light bothers him and distracts him when he is driving. So the last time I drove I had to put a blanket OVER my Kindle and it's light so I could read in the car..LOL..
Barb
No connection at the farm yet. Coverage in our area for cell phones is pretty spotty, so the smart phone would not be a reliable option.
DeleteI use my driving time for working out the plots on my stories. I won't let my husband drive unless he gets new glasses. He runs too many stops signs. Although that shouldn't surprise me. He loves to tell the story of how he failed his driver's test some fifty years ago by running a stop sign. Claims it was unfair because the road was dug out. I don't know, the only stop sign in town, you would think he would have just known it was there.
Annette
You know you are a Darcyholic when you start picking up habits from characters in JAFF stories... for example, I have now set my Kindle to read my JAFF books to me while I'm driving, dusting, cooking, folding laundry, etc.!
ReplyDeleteHmmm... I wonder which story gave me that idea ;)
Hmmmm.. I have NO idea where you would have gotten that idea Wendi! :P LOL.
DeleteBarbara
How do you do that, Wendi??????? I want that! I have a kindle app on my tablet. Is that enough or you have to have a kindle reader, I mean THE klinde device?
DeleteYes, Rita, the Kindle! It's great! It is under the experimental menu on the Home page, but you have to be in the book to use it (and it isn't on that menu - weird.)
DeleteFirst open the book, then press the up-arrow key and hold it down while you press the Sym key, and then let go of both. It will start reading. The voice is synthetic-sounding and it gets some of the words wrong, but it's better than nothing! On Youtube I saw there is a woman's voice, and I liked the sound of her voice better, but I can't seem to get to it.
These are all too funny. My name is Janet and yes, I am a Darcyholic! While I eat my meals, I either read a JAFF book or watch Darcy on the BBC/A&E miniseries of P&P. Can't get enough of that man!
ReplyDeleteJanet:
DeleteOh yes, I almost always am reading when I am reading. I even try to read from my phone or my Kindle when my husband and I are out to dinner.. but only if he is watching a ball game on his iPhone..LOL. Can you tell we are in our 28th year of marriage..LOL. Thanks for sharing! Glad you liked them! Will enter you into the contest! Barbara
My name is Charlene and I'm a Darcyholic. I'm just thankful to all the rest of you because between my family and work they all want to commit me to a psych ward. It nice to know I'm in great company and not crazy at all. Love you all!!!! :))
ReplyDeleteCharlene! I am very glad that I will not be ALONE in the psych word when they open the treatment that specializes in treating 'Darcyholism! So glad that you stopped by to comment! :D
DeleteBarbara
My name is Rita and I am a Darcyholic. Now I finally understand the crowd that goes to COMIC CONs, people that dress like Star Trek characters and other "nerdy" stuff...LOL. I used to think that I would never love something that would make watch or read over and over and over - so naive. Since I found out about JAFF (it is all a blur but Barbara had a lot to do with it) I cannot think of anything else. If you are still not convinced here are some things to consider.
ReplyDelete1) I love books and have a long to-read list that now is always trumped by another JAFF book.
2) I have a Regency period gown and already found someone to make me some new ones.
3) When I am at work, I look forward to the end of the shift (I'm a nurse) so I can run home and read some more steamy scenes between Darcy and Elizabeth from whatever book I can put my hands on.
4)My kindle app is full of JAFF books.
5)When I finish a book I have a hard time deciding which P&P adaptation I am going to read next because there so many choices.
6) When I am having a hard time at work (nursing is very stressful) I go to my happy place in my head...can you guess where? Hertfordshire or Derbyshire during the Regency period...LOL.
7) Last but not least, My heart aches when I see Colin Firth anywhere and I am a bit ashamed I have a teenage crush on him as I am 45 years old...hahaha!
I could go on but I want to stay on this rehab and not been kicked out to a looney bin!
Rita:
DeleteI did not realize that I had been a partial 'carrier' of Darcyholism! I can't wait to see all of your Regency gowns! I need to get one of my very own!
I DO understand, completely, #3, as I often find myself in Derbyshire or even Kent when I am having a particularly stressful day.
As for the crush... Well, it has gone way beyond that for me! After all I DID create this blog! ;)
Great list Rita! Barbara
Oh, wow, you have a gown?! That is so cool, Rita! Any photos online anywhere?
ReplyDeleteWendi
Wendi:
DeleteActually she DOES have pictures! (I have SEEN them Rita!) Sounds like a guest post to me!
It is completely possible that there could be more than one winner in this particular contest!
Barbara
Tell me how you've seen the post in your head (about me and my darcyholism or about the tea party with emphasys on my love for Mr. Darcy?) and it will be my pleasure to write.
DeleteI mean, should I post all the pictures with gowns and talk about the party (like the post you saw) or just my pictures in Regency dress and my love for Mr. Darcy?
DeleteRita:
DeleteI will get in touch with you via email about a possible post! But I would see it your costume pictures as PART of your growing obsession with all things JAFF and Darcy.
After all, I hope that this is a place that we can celebrate our obsession!
